Because local news matters

Celebrating Local News Day

Happy Local News Day!

Today is the inaugural Local News Day when newsrooms and communities across the country are celebrating the impact and importance of local news.

"Local News Day is a national day of action connecting communities with trusted local news. Our mission is simple: reconnect people to trusted local outlets, empower newsrooms to grow, and spark a national movement that sustains local news for generations."

Local News Matters

The reason The Roseville Reader exists and the reason we believe so strongly in making this publication possible, is because local news matters.

Here are a few reasons why:

  • Local news is essential for a healthy democracy and a thriving community.
  • Understanding what's happening in our city helps us get more involved.
  • Knowing who our neighbors are, helps us care more about each other.
  • When we know what's going on in local government we make more of an effort to vote, give feedback at city council meetings, or run for local office.
  • When we know more about what's happening in local schools we feel more invested in the success and well-being of the community's children.
  • Independent local journalism holds elected officials to account and increases transparency between the government and the public.
  • Community-focused local news lifts up local businesses and contributes to a flourishing local economy.
  • Ethical local journalism counters misinformation and helps readers get answers to their questions about the community.
  • Local news informs the larger news ecosystem, which makes regional and national news more nuanced, diverse, and relevant.

The Changing News Landscape

Trust in "the media" is at an all time low and community newspapers have been folding at an alarming rate in the U.S. for decades. Forty percent of local newspapers have vanished in the past twenty years across this country and that percentage holds true for Minnesota. Since 2018, Minnesota has lost at least 94 local newspapers, according to the Minnesota Journalism Project. This includes the former Roseville Review which closed abruptly in 2019.

The Good News

Here's the good news: a new wave of independent, local news outlets are springing up all over the country. Founded by journalists and community members who recognize the importance of local news, these new publications are committed to keeping community journalism alive.

That's why The Roseville Reader is here. We want to be here for the long haul to publish trustworthy journalism and help you be a more civically engaged and connected member of the community.

Our Story

We Need You

The Roseville Reader is not part of a large corporation and it wasn't started by an independently wealthy entrepreneur. We're a tiny newsroom with one part time local journalist/editor who is working with a handful of local reporters to cover local government, school, and community life. This is a meaningful way for us to invest in our community and it's an honor to publish local journalism for you.

We continue to be able to do this because of the enthusiasm, support, and readership of community members like you!
