The local Northeast Metro Golden K Kiwanis has awarded scholarships to nine area high school graduates.

With a mission to help improve the lives of local children and youth, the Northeast Metro Golden K Kiwanis are a group of retired local professionals who meet weekly in Roseville for thought-provoking speakers. Speakers include experts from business, government, community, local university or other specialists on fascinating topics.

Like the Lions, Rotary, or Optimist Clubs, Kiwanis International is a service club, with a special focus on serving children and youth. The members of the local chapter regularly tutor students at Central Park and Little Canada Elementary Schools.

"[Club members] also serve as volunteers for local nonprofits providing nutrition, counseling, furniture, school supplies and other needs of kids. They also are the cleanup crew for Roseville’s Howard Johnson Park," Roland Wells, president of the Northeast Metro Golden K Kiwanis, told the Roseville Reader. Members serve at local food shelves and support organizations like NE Youth and Family Service, Kids in Need, Bridging Inc. and others.

In May, nine area high school graduates were each awarded one thousand dollar scholarships from the club. Each school chose its own recipients and presented the awards at their respective assemblies. The scholarship recipients, with their respective high schools and post-secondary plans, include:

  • David Mullo Cruz, Irondale High School | Minneapolis Community College
  • Claire Thomalla, White Bear Lake High School | University of St. Thomas
  • Jenna Levine, Roseville Area High School | Colorado State University
  • Fredrika Kamara, Roseville Area High School| University of St. Thomas
  • Zhenghao Shao, Mounds View High School | University of Minnesota (Twin Cities)
  • Rosemerry Rai, Roseville Area High School | University of Minnesota (Twin Cities)
  • Tony Bate, Fairview Alternative High School | post-secondary plans TBD
  • Leonna Slaughter-McKaskel, Fairview Alternative High School | post-secondary plans TBD

The first Northeast Metro Golden K scholarships were given in 2005.  Since then, a total of 69 scholarships have been awarded, totaling $69,000.

The club meets at 2:00 p.m. each Tuesday at the Roseville Skating Center.
