Roseville Area Schools Nutrition Services Coordinator Stacey Gaetz has been named the 2025 School Lunch Hero Award winner by the Minnesota School Nutrition Association (MSNA).

“I’ve always been proud to be called a ‘lunch lady.’ To me, it’s one of the best jobs you can have. I’ve often said that being a teacher is like being the parent in the building, but being the lunch lady is like being the cool aunt—we get to have fun, show kindness, and make sure every student feels welcome,” Gaetz said.

Stacey was presented the award on May 2, 2025, as part of the national School Lunch Hero Day and will also be honored when MSNA members meet for their Annual Conference in Rochester in August.

The award recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond daily at their job. Gaetz has worked at Roseville Area Schools for 13 years, starting as a substitute, then a nutrition assistant, an elementary kitchen manager, nutrition specialist, and now she proudly serves as the district’s nutrition coordinator.

“It was an honor to present Stacey with the 2025 Hero Award and recognize what an asset she is. Between the positive rapport she establishes with her team and the various initiatives she takes on to directly benefit students, her deep commitment contributes greatly to her program’s success,” said MSNA President Emily Malone.

MSNA is a state-wide nonprofit association of over 2,500 members who work to ensure that all children have access to healthy meals and nutrition education in Minnesota.

Gaetz is known for her positivity, keeping morale high, and embodying dedication, enthusiasm and an unwavering commitment. Gaetz has worked to enhance the student experience, ensuring they receive high-quality meals while fostering a welcoming cafeteria environment. She’s also helped boost menu offerings by expanding the Farm to School program and incorporating different Minnesota Thursday menu items. She researched vendors to source new menu options, including bison hot dogs and locally made sauerkraut and recipes for Hmong menu day.

“Creating a positive space where kids can refuel both physically and emotionally is something I take great pride in. Making a delicious meal and seeing students light up as they enjoy it truly warms the heart and soul. I’m so thankful to be part of this community, and I’m proud to serve the students and staff of Roseville every day—no matter what my role is,” Gaetz said.

Beyond menu planning, Gaetz has learned to operate many different facets of the department from budgeting, coding and personnel management to equipment and kitchen construction management. In the last year, she onboarded five new managers and eagerly supports and encourages their growth and success.

“She is a joy to work with and is always thinking of how we can best serve our students and community well. She is first to jump in on the frontlines to serve students, wash dishes and support our managers. We are so lucky!” Maria Amerman, Nutrition Services Supervisor, said.

Gaetz says she was “shocked” to receive the award, not realizing she had been nominated. She is grateful for her team and feels supported and appreciated by the people she works with. Gaetz feels fortunate to be part of a strong community at Roseville Area Schools and is grateful to be able to help feed kids every day.

“There’s something truly special about knowing you’re helping students stay nourished and ready to learn each day—it’s work that’s both meaningful and fulfilling,” Gaetz said.
