Governor Walz issued a new writ of special election on Wednesday for the vacancy in MN House District 40B to be held on March 11, 2025.

Interested candidates must file with the Secretary of State by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11. If a special primary is needed, it will be held on Feb. 25.

The special election had previously been called for Jan. 28, but then was canceled after a judge ruled that Walz called the election prematurely. The two candidates who were on that ballot were David Gottfried (DFL) and Paul Wikstrom (GOP). The candidates must file again. Any ballots that were submitted in January have been voided and will not count. Voters must vote again with new ballots for the rescheduled special election.

The Roseville Reader will publish more information about the candidates after February 12 when the candidate filings are final.

For the Special Election, voters in MN House District 40B can vote absentee starting March 5, but due to the short timeline, the Secretary of State recommends dropping ballots off at one of the in-person locations instead of mailing them. You can vote in-person on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at your polling place between 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. For up to date information about early and absentee voting, view the information on the Secretary of State website.

If you aren’t yet registered to vote, you can pre-register by February 17 or register at your polling place on election day.
