The curbside Food Scraps Pickup Program is now available to all of Washington County and much of Ramsey County, but not Roseville. What's going on? When will Roseville get access?

Through this program, residents in participating communities can compost their kitchen scraps by placing them in a sturdy, compostable bag directly in their regular trash bin. Then the food scraps are taken to Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy in Newport for sorting and composting.

It's not only Roseville waiting for access to this program. Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Saint Anthony Village, and all of Saint Paul are also waiting. The holdup? Construction of the new Como Transfer Station, which is necessary for these remaining areas to participate.

The technology used to sort the food scrap bags from the rest of the trash is at the Newport facility, and most haulers servicing Roseville bring trash to a transfer station first. The robots that sort the compost bags from the rest of the waste need to be trained and installed at the transfer station in order for the Roseville area to get access.

“By offering these locations where trash can be consolidated before it’s delivered to the R&E Center, trash trucks don’t have to drive as much, thus preventing vehicle emissions and wear and tear on roads,” Sam Holl, Facility Director at Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy, told the Roseville Reader in 2024.
