Roseville varsity boys soccer head coach makes history
Coach Vigil leads team to victory
A Roseville Area High School Varsity boys soccer victory on Thursday evening kicked off a new era for the team at the home opener on August 27. The Raider win over the Spring Lake Park Panthers wasn't the only milestone the team is celebrating.
Head Coach Joseph Vigil, 20, is the youngest head coach in Roseville history and one of the youngest head coaches in Minnesota State High School League history, across all sports. (Though they don't keep records, there's a 19-year-old dance coach in Aitkin, according to Strib Varsity reporting.)
Prior to taking the helm at Roseville, Vigil coached two seasons at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights, where he led the team to the state tournament in 2025. Vigil holds a US Soccer Federation Class C coaching license, according to a press release from the team boosters.
Vigil is not new to Roseville. In fact, he played Raider soccer and graduated from RAHS.
“I’m thrilled to be back home at Roseville,” said Vigil. “I firmly believe in giving back to my community, as someone who sees the huge potential here. I want the boys’ soccer program to be something the whole community is excited about.”
Fans cheered the Raiders on to victory 2 to 1 under the stadium lights and the glow of a rising full moon. The first goal was scored by Daniel Avilés Hernández and the second by Leon Smith, both juniors at RAHS.
The win was especially sweet considering the team won no games last season, according to Booster Club President Jamie Becker-Finn.
“So many people experienced the joy of soccer through the World Cup this summer and we hope that folks can now keep it local by supporting this program,“ said Becker-Finn. “Having a homegrown talent like Coach Vigil leading these student athletes is something we want to celebrate with everyone in the Roseville school community.”
Cheer on Roseville vs. Osseo at home on Saturday, August 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the RAHS stadium.
