On Monday, July 28, The City of Roseville released its annual State of the City video address, featuring Mayor Dan Roe giving an overview of the city's activities and accomplishments over the past year.

The video highlighted major updates from city departments including Parks & Recreation, Community Development, Fire Department, Police Department, and Public Works.

The twelve-minute video was created by city staff in collaboration with Mayor Dan Roe, who narrated the update. City staff compiled information shared from different city leaders and the City Manager to create the script, which Roe had final writing and editing authority over, according to the city's community relations staff.

The tradition of giving an annual state of the city address dates back at least 20 years, though city staff aren't certain when it started. Roe recalls Mayor Craig Klausing giving State of the City addresses when he was mayor, beginning in 2004 or 2005.

"The video is a way for local residents and businesses to see the breadth of what the City does toward maintaining a high quality of life in the community," Roe told the Roseville Reader.

Roe has given State of the City addresses since 2011. Initially, the addresses were delivered before city council meetings. Then they moved to the Wednesday morning Roseville Business Council meetings before switching to pre-recorded videos during the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

The State of the City address used to take place in the winter, but switched to the summer in 2024. This was a better time for staff and it also increased viewership.

"Roseville has nearly 680 acres of award-winning parks, and we wanted to showcase some of that vibrant green space during the height of the growing and playing season," Shannon Prather and Ian Walesch from the city's community relations office told the Roseville Reader. "The mayor and camera crew were all turning blue during outdoor shoots in February in prior years!"

You can find recordings of previous State of the City addresses dating back to 2014 on the City of Roseville YouTube channel.
